These articles are general information and not financial, legal or tax advice. Rates, fees and rules change, so confirm current figures with the lender, the NCR or SARS before you act.
In South Africa, anyone who lends money as a business must be registered with the National Credit Regulator. Borrowing from an unregistered lender puts your money, your documents and sometimes your safety at risk.
Three quick checks before you sign
- Ask for the NCR registration number. A genuine credit provider will give it to you without hesitation.
- Verify it with the NCR. Look the lender up on the NCR website (ncr.org.za) or phone the NCR call centre on 0860 627 627.
- Read the credit agreement. It must show the amount you borrow, the interest rate, all fees and the total you will repay.
Red flags
- Asking for an upfront fee before paying out the loan
- No credit check or affordability assessment at all
- Keeping your ID, bank card or PIN as security
- Pressure to sign immediately, or contact only through social media or WhatsApp
If something feels wrong
Do not pay anything and do not hand over documents. Report the lender to the NCR and keep screenshots of all messages.
General information only. Always confirm registration directly with the NCR.
Only borrow from a lender you have verified yourself.
