TransUnion’s first-quarter 2026 report found that South African consumers are leaning more on existing credit, and that credit card reliance is growing along with signs of repayment pressure. Choosing the right product matters more when budgets are stretched.

When a credit card works

  • For small, short-term needs that you can pay off within the interest-free period.
  • When you want flexibility and can repay the full balance each month.

When a personal loan works

  • For a larger, planned expense that you will repay over a fixed period.
  • When you want a set instalment so you know exactly when the debt ends.

The warning sign

If you are only paying the minimum on your card each month, interest builds quickly and the balance barely falls. In that case, a fixed-term loan at a lower rate used to clear the card can help, but only if you stop adding to the card.
